Help us find a bone marrow match for Jack and others like him!
Allen High School will be hosting a bone marrow drive on Thursday, April 19 from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM outside the Allen HS Cafeteria. Be The Match is currently looking for individuals aged 18-44 who meet the following criteria - Donor Criteria
Joining the registry is easy and free. Complete the necessary paperwork and swab your cheek with a few cotton swabs to collect your DNA. However, please note that joining the registry is a huge commitment and should not be taken lightly. Additional information can be found below.

What is Fanconi Anemia?

Fanconi Anemia (FA), named for the Swiss pediatrician Guido Fanconi, is an inherited disorder that can lead to bone marrow failure, leukemia and/or solid tumors.  FA is almost exclusively a recessive disorder: if both parents carry a defect in the same FA gene, each of their children has a 25% chance of inheriting the defective gene from both parents. When this happens, the child will have FA. In our family, Jack received both recessive genes and has the disease, one sibling is a carrier, and one sibling does not have either gene. 

Though originally considered primarily a blood disease, it may affect all systems of the body. The majority of individuals affected by FA develop bone marrow failure, necessitating a stem cell transplant. Jack is in this category of patients.  He is in bone marrow failure now, and will be in need of a marrow transplant in the future. However, there are no family members that are a match for Jack. 

Many patients develop Acute Myelogenous Leukemia or Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Patients who live into adulthood are extremely likely to develop head and neck, gynecologic, and/or gastrointestinal cancer which occur at a much earlier age than the general population. The overall median lifespan for FA individuals is 33 years.
